Biography

Steven Charles - Artists - Cris Worley Fine Arts

Steven Charles b. 1967- The paintings by Steven Charles are electrifying multi-layered abstract compositions that obsessively shift in spatial depth and color. Playful, rigorous, and spontaneous, his works are rich in their connection to art movements, such as abstract expressionism and pop art, while pulsating in a distinct maximalist style all their own. The paintings, known for their psychedelic effect, are completed with an eerily sweet palette of acrylic paint, sometimes combined with collage in the form of found material. Charles’s process does not engage the use of preparatory designs, nor does he employ the help of assistants. His focus in laboriously building the circuitous patterns in his paintings—sometimes working on a single canvas for years at a time—is for the expressed purpose of enticing viewers in for a closer look. For Charles, and the viewer, the pleasure is in the details.

Steven Charles was born in Birkenhead, England, in 1967 and immigrated to North Texas in the late 1970’s. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in 1994, and he gained his Master of Fine Arts degree from The Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 1996. Shortly thereafter he moved to New York, where he was a Visiting Artist Lecturer at the School of Visual Art in 2003 and 2015. His work has been nationally exhibited in galleries and museums on the East and West Coasts, as well as abroad in Canada and Spain. Most notably he was represented for many years by Pierogi and Marlborough Galleries in New York City. He has been the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and an Artist’s Fellowship from The New York Foundation for the Arts. His work has been reviewed in publications such as, Art in America, The New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, and Vice among others.
