Press Release

Cris Worley is proud to present Dreamscape, her eighth solo exhibition with Dallas-based artist, Charlotte Smith, opening with a reception on Saturday, October 14, from 5 to 8pm. Dreamscape will include abstract paintings in acrylic on canvas. The exhibition will be on view through November 11.

Charlotte Smith’s artistic practice has culminated in 20 years of exploration into pure process-driven abstraction. Over the course of her career, Smith has constantly pushed the physical boundaries of painting, through the arduous building and layering of drips, drops and strokes. Layer upon layer builds and extends across the canvas’ terrain, creating dynamic compositions that engage the eye to move and explore.

In Dreamscape, Smith explores her materials in a large-scale format, allowing her further opportunity to extend and grow the possibilities of her materials. Smith’s desire to “go big” came from two recent works: a 192-inch painting, The Stars at Night are Big and Bright, now housed in the Professional Office Building II at UT Southwestern and a 144-inch commission for the new law office of Gardere, Wynne and Sewell, LLP, both in Dallas, TX.

Charlotte Smith received her MFA from the University of North Texas where she studied under the tutelage of Vincent Falsetta. Immediately following, she spent four years with the prestigious artists’ cooperative, 500X Gallery, Dallas, TX. She has mounted thirty solo exhibitions and has been selected for more than twenty juried exhibitions, often receiving awards. Smith is firmly entrenched in Texas Art History - she was recently included in the following publications: Global Corporate Collections (2015), Texas Abstract (2014), The State of the Art: Contemporary Artists in Texas (2012), and Texas Artists Today (2010). Her work can be found in the collections of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, the Museum of Southeast Texas, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, and Neiman Marcus stores nationwide, as well as many additional significant private and corporate collections throughout the country.
